A certified copy is one we draft and certify as a true copy of your Deed Poll. HM Passport Office and the DVLA ask for the original itself, but many other organisations that will not accept a photocopy will accept a certified copy in place of the original, which is what makes them worth ordering.

Changing your own name
Who can change their name this way?
Anyone aged 16 or over living in the UK can change their own name by Deed Poll. You do not need a reason, you do not have to explain yourself, and nothing is recorded on any register.
Can I change my title as well?
Yes. Your Deed Poll records the title you want to be known by alongside your name: Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms, Mx, Dr, or none at all. You choose it at the checkout and we do not ask why.
Can I change my name to anything I like?
Almost. You cannot choose a name that is impossible to pronounce, includes numbers or symbols, is vulgar or offensive, promotes criminal activity, or implies a title or rank you do not hold. Everything else is fair game.
Do I need a solicitor?
No. A Deed Poll does not have to be drafted or witnessed by a solicitor to be legally binding, and GOV.UK says so. Our paralegals hand-draft every one and we guarantee it will be accepted.
Do I have to register it anywhere?
No. There is nowhere a Deed Poll must be registered. Enrolling one at the Royal Courts of Justice is optional, costs £53.05 and makes no difference to whether it is accepted. More on enrolment.
Does my birth certificate change?
No. A birth certificate is a record of the birth as it was registered and it is not reissued when you change your name. Your Deed Poll is what you show alongside it, and record holders are used to seeing the two together.
How do I sign and witness it?
Sign it in front of two independent adult witnesses, who sign it too: there is a space for each, and we recommend using both. They must be over 18, not related to you and not living at your address. A friend, neighbour or colleague is ideal. The guide we send explains it in a page.
