Writing your own costs nothing

It is worth saying plainly. You may write your own Deed Poll, sign it in front of two witnesses, and it is legally binding from that moment. GOV.UK says you can make one yourself, without a solicitor.

    The trade-off is practical, not legal. There is no official form for an unenrolled Deed Poll, so every organisation decides for itself whether the document in front of it is good enough.

    • A deed that is close but not quite right tends to be refused weeks later, at a counter
    • You then redo it, and start the applications again
    • If you do write your own, keep to the three standard declarations, print it, and sign it in front of two witnesses over 18 who are not related to you and do not live at your address

What you do not need to pay for

  • A solicitor or a notary

    Neither is required for a Deed Poll to be binding. If either is quoted to you as compulsory for a name change used in the UK, it is not.

    The genuine exception is a document going abroad. Some foreign authorities ask for a notarised or apostilled document, which is a separate service you arrange and pay for yourself.

What does the refund cover?

The whole order, if a Deed Poll we drafted is refused: a full refund, not a partial credit and not a voucher. It does not cover a deed we did not draft. About the guarantee.

Do I need to pay for a Deed Poll if my name changed when I married?

Usually not. If you took your spouse's surname, your marriage or civil partnership certificate is normally the evidence, and HM Passport Office, the DVLA and your bank ask to see it. For a passport the certificate covers a double-barrelled name too. A Deed Poll helps when the name you want is not covered by the certificate, such as a combined surname. Which route fits your situation.

Why does a replacement cost the same as a new Deed Poll?

A replacement is drafted again from the start, checked and posted in the same way. There is no register of unenrolled Deed Polls, so nobody holds a copy of yours to send out. It records the change you already made, so it is not a second change of name. About replacements.
