    Go back to whoever issued the original

    If you know who drafted it and they are still trading, ask them. Some keep records and will reissue. Not all do, plenty of small services have closed since, and a solicitor will usually charge for the time. It costs a phone call to find out.

  • This will not work

    Use a photocopy of the lost one

    A photocopy is not evidence of anything, and most record holders will not take one. They want the original or a certified copy, which is a copy somebody qualified has certified as genuine. A scan on your phone is in the same category.

  • Not what it is for

    Apply to the Royal Courts of Justice

    Enrolling a Deed Poll is a separate process for creating a public record, costs £53.05, and does not retrieve a lost unenrolled deed. If yours was never enrolled, and almost none are, there is nothing there to recover.

Replacing a lost Deed Poll

Does it matter who issued my original Deed Poll?

No. There is no Deed Poll registry or central office, so no one holds a copy of yours. We can draft a replacement whether the original came from us, from another drafting service, from a solicitor or from a notary public.

Do I have to change my name again?

No. A replacement records the change of name you already made, and the date you made it. You are not starting over and nothing you have already updated needs undoing.

Will a photocopy of my old Deed Poll do instead?

Usually not. Many organisations will only accept an original or a certified copy, and HM Passport Office and the DVLA ask for the original itself, which is why a photocopy of a lost deed rarely gets you anywhere. A replacement gives you an original again.

Do I have to tell everyone about my name change again?

No. Your name has not changed, so anything you have already updated stays as it is. A replacement exists for the organisations you have yet to tell, and for the next time somebody asks you to prove the change.

What if I cannot remember the exact date I changed my name?

Tell us as much as you know at the checkout and a paralegal will work it through with you. An approximate date is usually enough, and if anything needs clarifying we will email before drafting.

Can I replace a child's Deed Poll?

Yes, at the same £18.50. A parent with parental responsibility applies, and everyone with parental responsibility for the child needs to agree, exactly as with the original.

Do I need to sign and witness the replacement?

Yes. Like any Deed Poll it takes effect when you sign it in front of your witnesses, who sign it too. It has space for two, and we recommend using both: each over 18, not related to you and not living at your address. The guide we send explains it in a page.
