Replacement certificate

A replacement Deed Poll certificate

A replacement Deed Poll certificate is a new deed, hand-drafted by a paralegal for £18.50, carrying your former name, your current name and the date you first changed it. It is not a copy of the lost one and need not match it, and it is posted the same working day.

Deed Poll

Change of name deed

Former nameAlex Example
New nameAlex Sample
Dated14 March 2009
It keeps the day you first changed your name, not the day it is drafted.

You are not changing your name again

A replacement records a change you already made. A passport, licence, bank account or pension already in your new name stays exactly as it is, and you do not need to tell anyone that you have replaced the deed. The only people who see it are those who ask for evidence from now on.

It does not need to match

What carries over, and what does not

An unenrolled Deed Poll has no official form. What an organisation reads is the names, the date and the signatures. If those are right and the drafting is sound, the document does its job.

Carries over

  • The name you gave up, in full
  • The name you use now, spelled the way you use it
  • The date the change took effect: the original one, not today’s

Free to differ

  • The wording. Ours is drafted in wording our paralegals know is accepted.
  • The paper. Ours is printed on our own certificate paper.
  • Who drafted the first one. Us, another service, a solicitor, or you.
  • A reference number. There is none, so there is nothing to quote.
Cannot remember the date?

It holds up far fewer orders than people expect

Put down the closest date you can at the checkout. If the paralegal drafting your deed thinks it needs pinning down first, they will email you before anything is printed.

If you would rather narrow it down first, these can help:

  • A passport or driving licence reissued in your new name. The change came before its issue date.
  • The first payslip or bank letter that carries the new name.
  • Your own email, searched for “deed poll”, “change of name” and your old surname.
  • Who witnessed it, if you know.
Whoever drafted the first one

Any original qualifies

We replace Deed Polls we drafted and ones we did not. It makes no difference to the document or to the price.

Another Deed Poll service

Including ones that have since closed, and ones whose name you can no longer remember.

A solicitor or a notary public

Whether or not they still hold a file copy.

One you drafted yourself

From a template or from scratch.

One of ours

However many years ago you ordered it.

There is no time limit. You do not need to produce the old deed, a photocopy of it, or a reference number.

Why it is drafted again

A fresh deed, not a duplicate

Nothing about a Deed Poll is issued from a record. There is no register of unenrolled deeds, so no file anywhere holds your change of name, and the document you had was the record. That is also why GOV.UK cannot send you a replacement.

So a replacement is made the way the first one was. A paralegal drafts a new deed in your two names, you sign it in front of two witnesses, and from that moment you hold evidence of your change of name again.

What it costs

£18.50 for an adult or a child

The same as a first Deed Poll. Adult is for anyone aged 16 or over replacing their own. Child is for under-16s, applied for by a parent with parental responsibility.

Questions & answers

About a replacement

What if the original turns up later?

Use whichever is in better condition, and send certified copies rather than either original wherever you can. If you are not sure which to use, ask a paralegal.

Is a replacement accepted in the same way as the original?

Yes. It is evidence of your change of name in exactly the way the lost one was. If a Deed Poll we drafted is ever refused, we refund you in full.

How quickly will it arrive?

It is drafted, checked and posted the same working day. Delivery is by Royal Mail, chosen at the checkout from £2.99, and Tracked post usually arrives in one to two working days.

Can I order certified copies of the replacement?

Yes, at the checkout, from £6 for two up to £25 for twenty, whether or not you had any copies before.

Something else? Ask a paralegal and we will answer, usually the same working day.

Need a replacement Deed Poll?

Apply online in about five minutes. Your replacement is drafted, checked and posted the same working day, and guaranteed to be accepted.
