DVLA timings

How long does DVLA take to change your name?

Usually about 3 weeks. GOV.UK says a driving licence applied for by post should arrive within 3 weeks, longer if DVLA has to check your identity or medical details, and DVLA asks you to allow 4 weeks before you chase it. You can keep driving while your licence is away, and your Deed Poll comes back on its own, by second class post.

Three weeks, and you can still drive

DVLA’s name change page gives no wait of its own. GOV.UK’s pages for renewing, replacing and re-addressing a licence by post all give the same one, within 3 weeks, and a new name can only go by post, so that is your number. The name change page is clear that you may drive while you wait for the new card.

After you post it

Your dates

When should your new licence arrive?

Put in the day the envelope went in the post. GOV.UK’s usual wait is 3 weeks, and DVLA’s own services update asks people who apply by post to allow 4 weeks and not to call before then, because the application is still being worked on and there is nothing more to tell.

  • Counted in calendar weeks. DVLA’s times are in weeks, not working days, so weekends count.
  • Checks add time. GOV.UK says it can take longer if DVLA needs to check your identity or medical details.
  • Online is quicker, but not for a name. Online licence applications arrive within about a week, and a new name cannot go online.

Driving meanwhile

Can I drive while DVLA has my licence?

Yes. GOV.UK’s page on changing the name on a licence says you can still drive while you wait for the new one, so there is no reason to put the envelope off.

DVLA’s services update adds that most applications let you carry on driving while it processes them, subject to conditions in its leaflet INF188/6, Can I drive while my application is with DVLA? Those conditions matter if your licence runs out while it is with DVLA, or if you have told DVLA about a medical condition.

Driving abroad soon? The leaflet points out that this cover comes from UK law, which other countries may not recognise, and suggests checking with the licensing authority there before you travel.

Waiting longer

When to chase DVLA, and how

GOV.UK’s tracking service covers applications made online only. For anything sent by post, it says to contact DVLA, so the date that matters is the one after which DVLA will talk to you.

  • 3 weeks

    The usual wait

GOV.UK’s time for a licence applied for by post.

  • 4 weeks

    Then contact DVLA

DVLA asks postal applicants not to call before this.

  • No date

    For your documents

They come separately, by second class post.

  • 6 weeks

    A new log book

The longest GOV.UK gives. Chase it after 4.

How to contact DVLA

Use GOV.UK’s Contact DVLA page, which finds the right route for driving licences and applications. If either the licence or your documents have not come back, GOV.UK says to contact DVLA about it.

Your Deed Poll

When you get your Deed Poll back

DVLA sends your identity documents back on their own, separately from the new licence and by second class post, and gives no date for them. To follow yours, GOV.UK suggests putting a stamped, self-addressed Special Delivery or Signed For envelope in with your form.

On the way there, DVLA’s services update suggests registered post for original identity documents, and GOV.UK reminds you to pay the correct postage. DVLA needs the original Deed Poll, not a certified copy: what DVLA accepts as proof, and what goes in the envelope.

While it is away, the rest of your list need not wait. Many organisations take a certified copy instead. Certified copies, from £6 for 2, up to £25 for 20.

What comes back, and how

  • Your licenceBy post, as soon as it is made
  • Your Deed PollOn its own, by second class post
  • To track itEnclose a stamped, self-addressed Special Delivery or Signed For envelope

Changing your passport too? HM Passport Office also wants the original, so the two go one at a time.

Before the clock starts

From ordering your Deed Poll to posting form D1

DVLA’s 3 weeks begin when you post the form, and DVLA asks to hear from you as soon as the new name is yours: how soon you have to tell it. Here is how quickly you can get to that point with one of ours.

  1. About 5 minutes

    Order online

A paralegal drafts your Deed Poll, quality control checks it, and it is posted the same working day.

  2. 1 to 2 working days by Tracked

    It arrives

Or 1 to 3 by 1st Class. Sign it in front of your witnesses and the name is yours.

  3. The step people forget

A document in your new name

With a Deed Poll, DVLA also wants one issued after it, such as a UK bank statement, a utility bill or a letter from HMRC. A UK passport number in the new name counts too.

  4. Then about 3 weeks

    Post form D1

From a Post Office, to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BN, free. Filling it in, part by part.

Northern Ireland

How long the DVA takes in Northern Ireland

A Northern Ireland licence comes from the Driver & Vehicle Agency, on form DL1 by post. nidirect puts the DVA’s aim at 10 working days from receiving a complete application, more when health or personal details have to be checked, and asks you to allow at least six weeks for the licence to come.

Keep an eye on the date: if you have not told the DVA within ten weeks that your licence has not come, nidirect says you will need a duplicate, and pay for it. Form DL1 and where it goes.

Questions & answers

More about DVLA’s timings

How long does DVLA take to change the name on a driving licence?

Usually about 3 weeks. A new name can only be applied for by post, and GOV.UK says a licence applied for by post should arrive within 3 weeks, or longer if DVLA has to check your identity or medical details. DVLA asks postal applicants to allow 4 weeks before getting in touch. What happens after you post it.

Can I drive while DVLA is processing my licence?

Yes. GOV.UK’s name change page confirms you can keep driving until the new licence arrives. DVLA’s leaflet INF188/6 sets out the conditions if your licence runs out while it is with DVLA or you have declared a medical condition, and warns that other countries may not recognise this cover. Driving meanwhile.

How do I track a name change sent to DVLA by post?

GOV.UK’s online tracking covers applications made online only. For a postal application it says to contact DVLA, and DVLA’s services update asks you to wait 4 weeks from posting before you do. To track your documents on the way back, enclose a stamped, self-addressed Special Delivery or Signed For envelope. When to chase, and how.

When will DVLA send my Deed Poll back?

Separately from your new licence, by second class post. DVLA gives no date for it. GOV.UK says to contact DVLA if your licence or your documents have not come back, and DVLA asks postal applicants to allow 4 weeks before calling. Your Deed Poll on the way back.

Can I change my name with DVLA online to make it quicker?

No. GOV.UK’s renewal page says that once your name or title has changed you can only apply by post, and its fee table lists a name change as free by post with no online option. Online applications arrive within about a week, but a new name always takes the postal route. Why it cannot be done online.

How long does a new log book take after a change of name?

Up to 6 weeks after you send the whole log book, GOV.UK says. Contact DVLA if it has not arrived after 4 weeks: leave it past 6 weeks without telling DVLA and a replacement costs £25. If your original Deed Poll is with DVLA for your licence, post the log book once it is back. The log book, step by step.
