Moving and a new name

Change your name and address on your driving licence

One form D1 changes both at once, by post, and it costs nothing. DVLA’s online service can update an address but never a name: GOV.UK says anyone changing their name at the same time has to apply by post. Send the D1 with your licence and original proof of the new name; the address needs no proof. Your log book goes in a separate envelope.

  • Free for both
  • One form, one new licence
  • Checked with GOV.UK, October 2026

Two changes, one new licence

Each application to DVLA ends in a new licence, so putting both changes on one D1 means one card, one wait and one envelope. Updating the address online first is allowed, but the card that comes back still shows your old name, and then it has to go off to DVLA again.

One envelope

What one envelope to DVLA changes

Form D1 puts your new name and your new address on your licence together. It does not reach the other records DVLA keeps for you as a vehicle keeper, which each change separately.

Can I change my name and address on my licence online?

Moving abroad? GOV.UK says a new address outside Great Britain cannot be registered on a British licence, and suggests contacting the licensing authority in your new country.

Proof

Proof for the new name, none for the address

DVLA wants original documents showing your new name, and GOV.UK’s guidance on a change of address asks for nothing at all to show where you now live. Write the new address on the form and that is enough.

Changing your name by Deed Poll? DVLA also asks for one document in the new name, dated in the last 12 months and after both the Deed Poll and your current licence. GOV.UK sets no rule about the address it shows, so a letter that reaches you at the new home serves as well as any other.

Your Deed Poll names an address too, and DVLA’s list of proof asks nothing about it. Deed Polls Online, our sister site, explains why moving house leaves a Deed Poll valid.

What DVLA needs to see

Your new name

Original proof

  • A Deed Poll, with one document in your new name or a UK passport number
  • A marriage or civil partnership certificate
  • Divorce papers, with your birth or adoption certificate

Your new address

No proof

Just write it on form D1.

From GOV.UK’s driving licence fees, checked October 2026. A new photo with an address change alone costs £14 online, but the online route is closed once a new name is involved.

After a wedding

A new name and a new home after marriage

Taking your spouse’s or civil partner’s surname as you move in together is the commonest reason to change both. Your original marriage or civil partnership certificate is the proof, so you need no Deed Poll, and everything goes on one D1.

Is your UK passport already in your married name? GOV.UK lets you write its 9-digit number on the form instead of posting the certificate. Your licence after marriage.

A blended surname, a new first name or a name neither of you had before goes beyond what a marriage certificate shows. That is where a Deed Poll comes in, at £18.50.

Two people, one move

  • Changing your surnameForm D1 by post, with your licence and the original certificate. Free.
  • Keeping theirsOnly the address changes, so the online service will do, free, and quicker.

Each licence is its own application, even when you post them together.

Your vehicle

Your log book needs its own envelope

A new licence leaves your vehicle log book (V5C) as it was. GOV.UK says a name and an address can change on the log book together, but only by post, and warns of a fine of up to £1,000 for not telling DVLA about either.

Expect up to 6 weeks for the new one, and contact DVLA if nothing has come after 4. If the vehicle needs taxing in the next 4 weeks, tax it online before you post the log book, or take it to a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax. The log book, section by section.

Two more, if they apply: a vehicle tax Direct Debit, and a private number held on a V750 or V778, where a V750’s address can change online but a new name always goes by post. Everything to update for your car.

In the log book envelope

  • Section 3Your new name and new address. No PO Box.
  • ProofOf the new name, such as your marriage certificate or Deed Poll
  • WhereThe whole log book, to the DVLA address printed in section 3

One Deed Poll cannot be in two envelopes at once, so post this when it is back from the licence.

On the older style log book, without coloured numbered blocks on the cover, use section 6, sign it and send it to the address in section 8.

Worth knowing

Timing, paper licences and other cases

Address now, name later

If your Deed Poll is not here yet, the address need not wait. The law expects a licence whose name or address has gone out of date to be surrendered straight away, so update the address online now and send form D1 for the name when your proof arrives. Both are free.

An old paper licence

A change of name or address moves you onto a photocard, free. Send a recent printed passport-type photo and proof of your identity with the D1. Paper licences and a new name.

Northern Ireland

The DVA takes a new address online, but nidirect says a change of name cannot be reported that way: it goes on form DL1, by post. The DVA’s form and address.

The duty to surrender a licence is in section 99 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Questions & answers

More about a new name and address
